Water flowed through her fingers.

It dripped away like dust, like money, like time. Like love.

She’d spent years brushing the dust from her hands, coughing it out of her lungs.

She was drowning in debt, and every day brought another demand on her wallet.

She’d wasted so much time on things she must, on things that only seemed important.

She’d driven love out of her life, pushed it away, failed to recognize it when it was offered.

But as she cupped her hands to collect the water, she thought, she hoped that the future just might offer another chance.

This is sad and poignant and lovely. Great imagery, lovely prose.

Oh, sad, but I think you captured that regret.

Thanks Ares. I think I must have been in a poignant mood last night - I ended up renting Slumdog Millionaire and staying up way too late.

Thanks. My Buffy is a thinky Buffy. (I'm rereading Cast Me Not Away - I'm starting to think you have an influence on my writing...)
