How can I possibly have a 14 year old?
Sep. 9th, 2006 08:36 pmI bet that caught your attention!
I'm babysitting for a few days. It feels rather odd, babysitting again. I haven't done that on any regular basis since I was 18. That was... a long time ago. Jeez, I'm old. No wonder my knees hurt.
Anyway, my aunt and uncle are out of town and asked if I would come down and watch their youngest. The older two boys are in university, so this will be Eric's first time "alone". He's only 14. Second week of grade 9.
God, I wanted to say no. But it's family. You can't say no to family - they're always there for each other. At least in my family. The thing about my family is that "always there for each other" goes three generations back and one forward. So that's a lot of people you can't say no to.
Mom and Dad are taking the weekend. But Mom needs to be in town for work and Dad; Dad drove 2 hours home this morning at 6 am to feed cows and pigs and see if the rain let up so he could get back to the field. It hadn't, so at 10:30, he drove 2 hours back to Oakville to hang out with Mom and Eric.
I'm taking the Sunday evening until Wednesday when my aunt and uncle get home. I can commute just as easily (only 30 minutes each way instead of my usual 2 hours) from Oakville as from Guelph.
I know it'll be fine. Get the kid to work, get the kid to school, make sure the homework is done, feed him once in a while. Easy enough, right? It just feels .... weird. I'm at an age when I should be worrying about my own kids, not babysitting. But here I am, childless, off to "parent" a 14 year old for 4 days.
Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully I'm not so old that I've forgotten all the various lies that are used to stay up late and hang out with friends.
