I'm up to page 146 of The Way the Crow Flies. The darkness has started.

I'm impressed with MacDonald's deft hand with suspense - we know bad shit is going to happen, is happening, even without reading the blurb. I love how my knowledge as an adult, as the omniscient audience (thanks to the omniscient narrator), creates both fear and hope.

Madeline is so innocent, so untouched, despite her somewhat morbid mentality. I know terrible things are going to happen to her - even without the darkness MacDonald hints at, just living life erases childhood innocence. I fear for her rapidly approaching loss of innocence as much as I hope that she'll remain herself - imaginative, thoughtful, creative, outgoing, generous, caring.
