Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Yeah, I know they don't have the internet, and if they did, I'd keep them the hell away from my LJ; nevertheless - Birthday Wishes for my Grump.
He turns 75 this week. We had a big barbecue in Kinloss (I dare you to find that on a map of Ontario!) with all of the neighbours, family and customers from the various businesses. Theoretically, this was also a (semi)retirement party - after 63 years of working (he dropped out of school to take his first job at 12), he's probably entitled.
Anyway, it was a good day - saw the redneck side of the family, did the appearance, tried to figure out which of Mom's cousins I was talking to at any given time. (Seriously, all the freaking cousins look alike. We're talking four, even five generations, and still, all the girls look like Great-grandma Fern, and all the boys look like Great-grandpa Tom. It's spooky. And yes, I'm included in that list - there's more than one of me in the world!)
There was some drama; there always is with that family. Some people don't know when to keep their mouths shut. Oddly enough, in this case, it wasn't me. I was actually praised for keeping out of it.
I love my family dearly, but, goddamn, am I glad I don't have to deal with them all the time. I know Mom thinks I should try to get into Bruce Nuke because of the good pay, cheap living costs and job security, but I couldn't deal with being dragged into that bullshit. So glad I'm in Guelph.

Date: 2005-06-13 06:29 pm (UTC)That'd be a no, then. (Actually, Dad said it's a good thing he doesn't retire all the way. The only exercise he gets is from the house to the car and the car to the shop and back)
