Because, as a co-worker pointed out, when you're writing a journal entry or a letter or something like that, you are reporting on what you observed, or stating an opinion on something that's already happened. The words flow because you're talking about something that already is. When you are writing a novel (or poem, or short story), you are creating something brand new. From scratch. It didn't exist before (except maybe, nebulously, in your mind). Its the act of creating that takes the time and is so exhausting. Don't be so hard on yourself. Keep working on it. You can do it!
