Mich's brain went sideways when she read my Rat drabble for open_on_sunday this week, so she issued a challenge. This is for the prompt "Rat Race"

***

She slept in every morning now. Of course, she had excuses – “I was out until sunrise” or “that thing was huge” or “I had to chase a vampire all over town”. Everyone seemed to accept her words at face value, tiptoeing in the morning so they wouldn’t wake her.

They were blind.

They missed the longing in her eyes as neighbours woke early, merged into traffic and made their way to work. They missed the jealousy as friends competed for plum positions and complained about the rat race.

The rat race seemed simple against her headlong dash towards for death.

I was wondering if you were going to post this. I'm glad you did. Oh, and for the record my brain goes sideways often *g*

Sideways is good. It leads to the most interesting conversations.

Besides, mine always ends up in the sewer, so sideways is way better than that.

A lovely drabble. I especially loved the last line.

Thanks, Ares. It was definitely the last line I was working towards.

That's really wonderful and sums up Buffy's fear and longings perfectly.
